What is experiential or outdoor education?

Experiential education is a philosophy and methodology in which educators purposefully engage with students in direct experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge, develop skills and clarify values. (Association for Experiential Education)

Outdoor education is a specific form of experiential education that teaches community living skills and builds self-confidence through wilderness activities such as rock climbing, ropes courses, backpacking, sea kayaking and snowshoeing.

Passages Northwest uses outdoor education because it is a proven method for girls to develop self confidence, competence, a healthy community of peers, and opportunities to express themselves creatively.
